SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks are receiving encouraging news on injured center Logan Couture and could know as soon as Monday as to when he might be able to skate again.Couture was originally considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury and has not practiced so far in training camp. But Sharks coach David Quinn said Couture felt good again Saturday morning as he slowly works his way back from the undisclosed ailment with the season opener now less than two weeks away.“It really is a pain and comfort situation and he’s getting better and better,” Quinn said of Couture. “He’s in a really good spot. He’s told me today, ‘It’s the best I’ve felt.’”Couture, 34, was the Sharks’ second-leading scorer last season with 67 points in 82 games. Entering his 15th season with the Sharks, Couture could become just the third player in team history to play 1,000 games for the organization, as he enters this season with 927 games played for San Jose. Couture is fourth all-...West Point sued over using race as an admissions factor in the wake of landmark Supreme Court ruling

By Michael Hill | Associated PressWest Point was accused in a federal lawsuit Tuesday of improperly using race and ethnicity as factors in admissions by the same group behind the legal challenge that resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down affirmative action in college admissions.Students for Fair Admissions claims the U.S. Military Academy sets benchmarks for how many Black, Hispanic and Asian cadets there should be in each class. The lawsuit filed in New York’s Southern District claims West Point is violating the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which contains an equal-protection principle that binds the federal government.“Instead of admitting future cadets based on objective metrics and leadership potential, West Point focuses on race,” according to the complaint. “In fact, it openly publishes its racial composition ‘goals,’ and its director of admissions brags that race is wholly determinative for hundreds if not thousands of applicants.”The academy said in a ...What you need to know about new DC-area laws taking effect on Oct. 1

With the new month on Oct. 1 comes a lot of new laws for the D.C. area. Here is what you need to know about what’s going into effect and where.MarylandThe time that some Marylanders will have to wait to get their criminal records expunged will be cut roughly in half. The Redeem Act goes into effect Sunday, meaning those with misdemeanors on their records only have to wait five years — instead of 10 — to file for expungement, and those with felonies will only have to wait seven years instead of 15.And those convicted of marijuana possession can file to have those cases expunged as soon as they complete their sentence.A victim of a hate crime can now bring a civil case against the offending person or group.A person seeking help during a medical emergency for taking drugs or alcohol will not face criminal charges if the only evidence against them is them seeking help — an update to the state’s good Samaritan law.Another new drug-related policy: Hospitals will now have to te...McIlroy loses match then loses temper at Ryder Cup after clash involving Cantlay’s caddie

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — Rory McIlroy lost his match at the Ryder Cup. Then he lost his cool.In scenes sure to stoke tensions ahead of Sunday’s singles, McIlroy accused Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, of waving his hat in his line of vision ahead of the European star’s crucial putt on the 18th green in the final fourballs match Saturday. That incident prompted another angry exchange involving McIlroy as he left the Marco Simone club. McIlroy was seen to be visibly furious outside the clubhouse as Jim “Bones” Mackay, the caddie for Justin Thomas, attempted to intervene.McIlroy was ushered into a waiting car by European teammate Shane Lowry, but only after plenty of shouting and finger-pointing. It wasn’t immediately clear who McIlroy was aiming his anger toward, but U.S. captain Zach Johnson said LaCava “was not a part of that.”The images were soon all over social media and will no doubt be part of the pre-match team talks before the singles. BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Deion Sanders is packing the stands and the coffers at the University of Colorado while attracting a celebrity guest list that rivals any awards show Hollywood has to offer. The green carpet that encircles the grass gridiron at Folsom Field might as well be red.Kevin Garnett, Terrell Owens and CC Sabathia were among the stars on the sideline before the Buffaloes hosted eighth-ranked USC on Saturday — and Coach Prime ran onto the field accompanied by rapper DaBaby. There’s Paul Pierce over here, Michael Westbrook right there and DeSean Jackson back here. And there’s DeAndre Jordan of the NBA champion Denver Nuggets. It mattered not that the Buffs were coming off their first lost, a 42-6 reentry at Oregon last week or that they were facing Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams without their two best defenders in Shilo Sanders (kidney) and Travis Hunter (liver). The Deion Effect remains in full effect in Boulder — and across the country for that matter.FOX’s...Ryder Cup Individual Points Table

LONDON (AP) — Joel Matip’s own-goal deep into stoppage time handed Tottenham a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday after a defiant showing from the visitors following two red cards.Liverpool looked set to hold on for a draw before Matip turned Pedro Porro’s low cross into his own net in the sixth minute of added-on time.Liverpool had Curtis Jones sent off in the 26th minute for a reckless challenge on Yves Bissouma and had to play the last 20 minutes, plus stoppage time, with nine men after substitute Diogo Jota picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.Liverpool would have gone top of the standings with a win thanks to Manchester City’s surprising 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton earlier Saturday. Tottenham moves up to second, overtaking Liverpool.Jones was shown a red card after a VAR review. He was initially given a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper after he caught Bissouma late in a tackle but it was upgraded after the official consulted th...Williams ties career high with 6 TD passes, No. 8 USC withstands late Colorado rally for 48-41 win

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Caleb Williams threw for 403 yards and tied a career high with six touchdown passes as No. 8 Southern California held off Colorado 48-41 on Saturday after racing out to a big lead.Leading 34-7 in the second quarter, the Trojans saw Colorado storm back to make it a one-score game with 1:43 remaining on Shedeur Sanders' 16-yard TD strike to Jimmy Horn Jr. The Trojans recovered the onside-kick attempt and Williams kneeled three times to close out the win.The Trojans (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12) improved to 17-0 all-time against the Buffaloes (3-2, 0-2), who were knocked off for a second straight week after a 3-0 start that made Deion Sanders' team the biggest story in college football.USC picked up right where Oregon left off last week, overwhelming the 21 1/2-point underdog Buffaloes in the first half.Williams smoothly operated the offense, completing 17 straight passes at one point.
