Biden’s pick to lead FAA withdraws amid shaky Senate support

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:22:22 GMT

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden’s choice to run the Federal Aviation Administration has withdrawn his nomination, a setback for the administration that comes after Denver International Airport CEO Phillip Washington appeared to lack enough support in the closely divided Senate.Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg confirmed Washington’s withdrawal in a tweet Saturday night, calling him “an excellent nominee” and blaming undeserved and partisan attacks.Republicans were united in opposition to Washington, calling him unqualified because of limited aviation experience. Democrats and allied independents still might have pushed the nomination through, but key senators on their side balked at supporting Biden’s pick.Washington’s fate appeared settled when Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., abruptly called off a scheduled vote last Wednesday — a sign that she lacked enough votes to move the nomination out of committee. She said some senators wanted more ...

Winderman’s view: Heat utterly defenseless at the worst possible time

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:22:22 GMT

Observations and other notes of interest from Saturday night’s 129-100 loss to the Brooklyn Nets:– For weeks, since the All-Star break, the Heat have been skating by on their offense.– But in the playoffs (or play-in) more will be needed on the other side of the ball.– Because against an opponent that moves the ball, slow-footed is not the best footing.– So an expiration date on Kevin Love as the starting power forward?– Getting back to Caleb Martin?– At times Saturday, the Heat defense was atrocious.– With all the Nets needing to do was move that ball.– Yes, size helps against offensive rebounding.– And that was a struggle Saturday, too.– But a move has to be made with the defense.– Saturday’s third quarter said it all.– There was no there there.– Two words not often heard about the Heat: defensively inept.– Lately, the words have been hard to avoid.– Even when masked by winning.&#...

PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets came into camp with a lineup full of veterans and top prospects trying to take away a few of their jobs. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos made some excellent cases for inclusion on the Opening Day roster, but they were optioned to Triple-A on Saturday night, following the Mets’ penultimate Grapefruit League game of the spring. The decision to send the two corner infield prospects to the minor leagues to begin the 2023 season came down to experience. Although they made great strides during spring training, ultimately, the Mets decided that it would be best to give them more experience with Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets want to see how they handle certain situations and while they’ve both improved defensively, they want the duo to continue to refine that defense. The need to play every day in order to continue to improve.“They’re a phone call away should something come up,” Mets general manager Billy Eppler said. “They don...

It brings us a lot of excitement, as you can tell,” said center Patrick Bath, who said he lost much of his voice celebrating in the locker room.Chatman finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Eagles went the final 7:27 without a basket, scoring seven points. Jackson McAndrew scored five of his game-high 25 points in overtime, and Wayzata beat Park Center 75-71 Saturday night for the Class 4A boys basketball championship. The Trojans got a little revenge, too. It’s the second title in three years for Wayzata, which fell 58-53 to Park Center last year.McAndrew is 6-foot-9 and listed as a guard, and justifiably so. Not afraid to battle inside — he had nine rebounds — the junior can handle the ball with ease and is quick on his first step. He showcased those with a drive off the left wing for an easy basket for a 71-68 lead.A 3-pointer from Jackson Fowlkes tied the game — and were the final Pirates’ points — but McAndrew’s 3-point shot from the right wing found nothing but net 11 seconds later for a 74-71 lead midway through the extra four minutes.Hayden Tibbets had 18 points and Jake Schmitt 13 for the Trojans (27-4).The end of regulation was nearly déjà vu for Wayzata.Out of a timeout with 1:24 remaining, the Trojans played for a final shot...
