Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 04:07:53 GMT

Spain’s Socialists have a Sánchez problem SEVILLE, Spain — Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez won’t be on the ballot when Spaniards vote in local elections Sunday — but he might as well be.Everyone in the country sees this weekend’s municipal votes as a dress rehearsal for the national election, which has to be held by the end of the year. That’s bad news for Socialist candidates like Antonio Muñoz, the mayor of Seville who just wants to be reelected on his own merit — but may end up losing his post because Sánchez is so unpopular. In an interview with POLITICO, Muñoz complained that the national framing of the election — and the conservative party’s critiques of Sánchez — had undermined the possibility of real debate over how to improve Spain’s fourth-largest city, the capital of the country’s Andalusia region.“If you want to just generate noise and have a debate about national politics: run for parliament, not mayor of Seville,” Muñoz said. “Me, I’ve stayed faithful ...

Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 04:07:53 GMT

Winning Weekend Weather The warmth of yesterday went out with that late-day front sliding through, ushering in cooler air along with some showers. The rain has tapered off early on this Thursday morning, yielding back to dry air, but cooler air as well. Highs today max out in the mid 60s with a northerly wind gusting to 15-20mph. It’ll be cool tonight with temps fading back into the upper 30s and low 40s in the cooler suburbs. The bounce back is nice tomorrow, as highs reach the low 70s inland and hold near 60 at the coast. The long weekend forecast looks great. Payback for the 2021 Memorial Day Weekend when 50s and rain prevailed? Temps Saturday run into the mid 70s, we push low to mid 80s Sunday and then back into the 70s Monday. It’ll be dry from start to finish with comfortable amounts of humidity in place. The Cape Cod forecast is dry, with temps in the 60s. The Lakes Region forecast is great too as mild to warm air wins out. Enjoy the weekend!

Battenfeld: Hillary Clinton waiting for Joe Biden to stumble in 2024? Don’t look now, but Hillary Clinton is still lurking in the weeds, waiting for Joe Biden to stumble. Literally. The former Secretary of State insists she’s not running for president again, but has offered only a tepid endorsement of Biden while raising questions about his age.“I obviously hope he stays very focused and is able to compete in the election,” Clinton said condescendingly of the 80-year-old President. “Because I think he can be re-elected and that’s what we should all hope for.”But Clinton even agreed that falling is a potential health risk for Biden, and did not dismiss the age issue as many other in denial Democrats have.“His age is an issue and people have every right to consider it,” she said at last weekend’s Financial Times Weekend Festival.Clinton also said she thinks Biden is ready to run for office again and said he hasn’t gotten enough credit for his “good record” in office. Thanks, Hillary. She’s lucky her remarks were mostly ignored. But if hope turn...

It’s ‘party central’ in the Bird Bath as Mr. Splash hoses down Orioles fans Rain drizzled down, ever so lightly, on Orioles fans during a recent game at Camden Yards. But in Section 86, it poured — and Michael Hackworth wore swim trunks.“I came prepared,” Hackworth, 29, said watching the team take on the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month. He wasn’t talking about braving the natural elements, but about a new water feature in the ballpark.Section 86 — officially the Bird Bath Splash Zone — is where “Mr. Splash,” a new mascot of sorts, hoses down (mostly) enthusiastic fans. The waterworks start anytime the Orioles record extra-base hits: doubles, triples and home runs.Almost instantly, the phenomenon became a hit, selling out tickets for the first seven games it was offered.“I feel like a kid here,” said Hackworth, who is a Birdland member and teaches world history at a public middle school in Virginia.A disclaimer to those buying tickets for the special section didn’t escape him. The Orioles...
