BANGKOK (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s trip to China, with the stated goal of working together to fight climate change, resulted in a surprise meeting with leader Xi Jinping and was filled with warm words and friendliness not seen in years in the China-U.S. relationship. The trip was seen as one of the steps in paving the way for U.S. President Joe Biden and Xi to meet in San Francisco in November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, but it also highlighted the existing relationship that China has with California, showing that even when tensions are high between the two countries, collaboration is still possible on some levels. The reception from China “sends a very clear signal that working with California is desired and, at minimum, politically safe and encouraged,” said Alex Wang, a professor of law at UCLA who focuses on the environment. U.S.-China relations have deteriorated significantly since 2018 over issues as wide-ranging as trade, the origin of COVI...

Letters: A word to start with as we work to prevent violence

‘Them’In the early 2010s, toward the end of my 30+ year career working in local public health, I was invited to take part in a meeting that I have never forgotten, all the more memorable given the dark events of recent weeks and the days to come. The meeting, part of a nationwide tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department, was with a group of public health officials from the Israeli and Palestinian Health Services. The topic of the gathering was to compare and learn from one another about effective approaches to promote individual and community health, focusing on healthy nutrition, physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. The first thing I remember about that day was watching out the front window as the delegations got off the van they were traveling in together; my colleague and I both remarked on how we had no idea who was Palestinian and who was Israeli. This remained true throughout most of our conversation together. The next thin...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies, with or without embattled star Ja Morant and injured center Steven Adams, are gritty, pesky, frisky and quite simply a pain to deal with.In the Nuggets’ first road contest of the 2023-24 season, they needed to overcome those aggravating qualities and their own sloppiness to earn a 108-104 win.The Grizzlies kept the game consistently hectic and kept Nikola Jokic in check, with two former Defensive Players of the Year (Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marcus Smart) nagging at him off-ball.With 6:05 remaining, an unsuspecting Jokic was stripped by Derrick Rose for his eighth turnover. The ensuing fast-break layup cut Denver’s lead to 95-93 and forced a Michael Malone timeout. Smart’s 15-footer less than two minutes later gave the Grizzlies a 98-97 lead. Denver had led almost the entire game.Yet even on Jokic’s uglier nights, he often is a difference-maker in winning ways. He and Jamal Murray knocked down consecutive 3-pointers for a ...
